POSITION SUMMARY: The Laboratory Testing Personnel perform moderately complex laboratory testing procedures according to established procedures, under the supervision of a designated Medical Technologist or Laboratory Supervisor. The Testing Personnel perform tests in compliance with standards and reviews and verifies results to ensure data validity. This position applies appropriate procedural techniques related to specimen procurement and handling, instrument operation, operator maintenance, application of universal precautions and inventory monitoring. The Testing Personnel perform and document quality control procedures and proficiency testing in accordance with established parameters and standards. This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to team work and cooperation. QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: High School diploma required and at least two years in an approved technician training program or 60 semester hours in chemistry/math/science/or laboratory techniques curriculum. LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician preferred but not required. Requires participation in 12 CEUs annually. EXPERIENCE: Prior laboratory experience preferred, but not required. Knowledge of medical terminology required; knowledge of laboratory information system utilization after six months on the job training. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire. PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: Demonstrates the ability to perform the department specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool. Strict compliance with laboratory Fraud and Abuse policies and requirements is an employment condition. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Must have the ability to distinguish colors. Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the laboratory environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury. The department specific Assessment and Evaluation Tool lists the essential functions of this position. This position demands increased amounts of standing, bending and manual manipulation as well as some light lifting. Core competencies will be assessed primarily to the following patient population(s) served (with the exception of newborns): All diagnoses/conditions of patients admitted to the hospital.
